Christopher B. Jackson: Immortal

For the exhibition, Jackson had his DNA extracted and analyzed, then systematically translated and algorithmically recoded sequences of his genome. The artist’s body has been deconstructed and recomposed: cells are replicated indefinitely; microorganisms and chemical traces are sealed in stasis. The displacement from the body into an archival state at atomic scale can be compared to transforming matter into memory. Parts of this mnemonic matter are crystallized and recrystallized in a perpetual cycle of being—altered each time through entropy and mutation, mimicking evolution. The artworks are not mere representation but an embodiment of being without a beyond. By reconfiguring and staging a fundamental drift between order and disarray, Jackson reveals the inherent essence of evolution and life. Mind and matter are inseparable; in fact, they are the same.
