The Artist´s Home of the Heiska Family

Situated on Kramsunkatu in Älylä, the Artist’s Home with its objects, art and book collections, photographs, and archival materials offers people from Jyväskylä and Central Finland as well as from elsewhere a chance to explore the life of the Heiska family of artists in their home environment over the course of two generations.

The artist Vappu Heiska (1921-1993) bequeathed the Artist’s Home with its movables to the City of Jyväskylä in 1993. The house had been designed and built in 1912 by her father, the artist Jonas Heiska (1873-1937). Back in the day, art lovers and the music circles of Jyväskylä gathered in the Heiska Artist’s Home. Maikki Heiska (1889-1961), the mother of the family of three, gave piano lessons there for numerous young pianists. The museum has been open to the public since 1998 and it is a part of the neighbouring Museum of Central Finland.
