Makkarakosken sahamuseo

he current Makkarakoski sawmill was built in 1875 to replace the previous sawmill that was destroyed by fire. The saw frames stopped operating in February 1956 when the mill closed. The original equipment from the 1880s has been preserved, making the sawmill a unique piece of industrial history.

Makkarakoski sawmill is a rare example of a sawmill’s lifecycle. It initially operated on water power, then steam power, and finally electricity. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that no similar sawmill museum is known to exist elsewhere in Europe.

The museum can only be visited on guided tours. Public guided tours are conducted in Finnish, but English-speaking visitors are welcome to join. Public tours are on winter break from November to April. The guided tour lasts approximately 50 minutes. Please note that the exhibition space is not accessible.

Public tours to the Makkarakoski sawmill depart from the Ahlström Voyage exhibition at Makkarakoskentie 34 B. The exhibition houses ticket sales, a museum shop, and restrooms.
