Brought by the river – returning to the shore
Loima art house, Loimaa
- 17.5.2025–27.9.2025
Architect and graphic artist Hannu Vaisto's career as an artist has continued for over 50 years, from his first public exhibition at the 26th Youth Exhibition in 1973 at the Helsinki Art Hall.
The Loimaa Art Museum was chosen as the venue for the retrospective exhibition, as almost all of Hannu Vaisto's family roots have (according to research to date) originated from the banks of the Loimijoki River, in dozens of houses dating back to at least the 16th century.
One part of the exhibition is a geographical map created by Vaisto, of the houses in Loimaa, where Vaisto's ancestors were born, lived and moved closer to the banks of the Aurajoki River, Hannu Vaisto's own birthplace.
The exhibition by graphic artist Hannu Vaisto consists of traditional black-and-white relief graphics, which he has made throughout his career and feels closer to his technique.
The works, which span different decades, include photographs in which Hannu Vaisto brings to light traces of changes and modifications, both in nature and in the industrial environment. The geological color and structure surfaces of northern ice and water, the melting of an Alpine glacier caused by climate change, or the patina of safety and guide signs at a household appliance factory in Lyon, as well as collections of objects, approaching personal history. The exhibition is not only retrospective but also ongoing into the future.
