Fragments of a World War - Hanko 1941-1944
Hanko Museum, Hanko
- 10.10.2025–30.8.2026
In March 1940, in accordance with the peace terms after the Winter War, Hanko was rented to the Soviet Union as a naval base.
All Hanko residents were evacuated and approximately 30,000 Soviet soldiers and civilians were stationed on the cape. While Russian troops fortified Hanko, the Finns built a defensive line around Hanko. When war broke out in June 1941, 15,000 Finnish soldiers were stationed on the Hanko front. The Hanko 1941–1944 project was started by archaeologist PhD Jan Fast in 2018. The project aims to investigate the war events on the Hankoniemi cape from an interdisciplinary conflict archaeology perspective. The exhibition at the Museum of Hanko summarizes the research results from six fieldwork projects in 2018–2025.
