The guest of November’s WeeGee Reads is beloved and award-winning author Monika Fagerholm with her new book Eristystila / Kapinoivia naisia (“Isolation / Rebel Women” only in Finnish and Swedish). The novel follows a young woman's search for her own unique life and writing during the turbulent, politically turbulent years of the 1970s. Isolation / Rebel Women tells of a time when a person is so young that the world opens as a horizon of possibilities and resistance. It is also a story about what it takes to grow as an artist. What kind of stories do you tell when nothing has happened yet?

18-year-old Alice moves from the countryside to her father's artistically inclined new family in the suburbs, where her stepmother is a luminous feminist. Alice's search for self begins, she attends night school, meets exciting new people, and is present where the best parties are held. Older people remember the late 1970s as a time of peace, but Alice's generation sees it differently: with news of unrest in Germany, rumors of battles being ruthlessly suppressed, and a rebellious woman dying in her cell, the walls of Alice's safe dollhouse are collapsing under the pressure of the conflagration.
