The museum is a specialized museum for craft covering entire Finland.

Stories are created by hand – discover your own!
Craft is a broad concept that encompasses both soft and hard materials, traditional techniques as well as new innovations. The museum presents several temporary exhibitions at the same time, showcasing different craft techniques, their makers and contemporary craft art, as well as, of course, the Finnish national costume tradition.

Finlands Hantverksmuseum has three permanent exhibitions that explore the significance of craft in Finnish society, examine the passage of time in craft as part of the continuum of history, and invite visitors to admire festive garments from past eras in the core exhibition of the Finnish National Costume Centre.

The museum’s permanent exhibitions are located on the ground floor and are included in the museum admission fee. The complementary exhibitions Craftstories – Tales of Finnish Skill and A Timeless Tradition - Finnish National Costumen offer a unique insight into Finland’s rich craft tradition as well as the history and present day of national costumes. Craft skills are an essential part of Finnish cultural heritage. Finland’s tradition of craft education in schools has also been pioneering on a global scale. The exhibitions encourage reflection on the preservation of skills and the role of craft in the contemporary world.

On the second floor of the museum, in the lecture hall, is the exhibition A Journey in Time, which presents selected highlights from the history of craft. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication available for purchase in the Museum Shop. The exhibition also features a tactile trail where visitors can explore dozens of different materials and key craft techniques from two millennia of Finnish craft history. For visitors with visual impairments, the tactile trail samples are also provided with texts in Braille.

The Conservation Centre and the Finnish National Costume Centre operate in connection with the museum.

Museum situetes in the very centre of Jyväskylä on the pedestrian street. We are an interesting and versatile destination for visitors, offering not only exhibitions, but also workshops, a museum shop for Finnish crafts and information on national costumes.
