Rautalampi museum

The Rautalampi Museum is a local cultural history museum founded in 1938, located along the main street of the village. The museum originated at Korhola Manor, when Aina Peura (1872–1940), a commercial councillor’s wife, began collecting local artefacts in the manor’s servants’ quarters. The museum’s collections currently comprise more than 70,000 items and records, including objects representing peasant and upper-class culture, photographs, archival materials, art from Northern Savonia, and an open-air museum area with historic buildings. The museum also regularly hosts changing exhibitions.

The magnificent three-storey museum building was designed by architect Toivo Anttila. Aina Peura (née Kukkonen) grew up with a strong appreciation for local heritage at her childhood home, Hinkkala, in Konnevesi (which at the time belonged to Rautalampi). Her father was Albert Kukkonen, who was also known as a folk poet. Heikki Peura, the owner of Korhola Manor and a commercial councillor, donated the plot of land and the funds needed to establish the museum, as well as a forest estate to support its upkeep.

At the Rautalampi Museum Shop, you can find exhibition-related products, an extensive selection of books, and locally made products such as jewellery and other handicrafts, honey, and candles.
