Forest Gnomes in the Christmas Window of Jyväskylä Art Museum

Jyväskylä Art Museum's traditional Christmas window will once again delight passers-by, opening on Friday 20 November 2026. This year, too, the magical window display has been created by local visual artist Jonna Suurhasko, who transforms the museum window into a glimpse into the world of gnomes.

This year's installation, Merry Art vol. 12, takes visitors into the realm of gnomes, inhabited by forest gnomes hundreds of years old. Finnish folk tales are full of stories about 'maahiset', small, human-like beings who belong to the spirit world beneath the earth. The underground world of these gnomes can be an upside-down reflection of our own. Gnomes may also be invisible, perhaps a little mischievous, and even possess magical powers. The window display is at its most atmospheric after dark. The festive installation can be admired in the window of Jyväskylä Art Museum from Friday 20 November throughout the Christmas season and into early 2027.
