UPCOMING: In the Shadows – We Still Dream

"In the Shadows – We Still Dream" is an immersive and evocative exhibition by visual artist Anni Laukka, exploring the experiences of Ukrainian children living under the shadow of Russia’s war of aggression. The subject deeply resonates with Laukka, who, as a mother, has empathised with the fates of affected families.

In her works, Laukka has incorporated toys recovered from bombed homes in Malyn, Morozivka, Mykolaiv and Borodianka. The collection of these items was supported by the Ukrainian charity organisation Malyn Volonter, while their transport to Finland was facilitated by the Pietarsaari-based Ukrainian Association.

Within the object installations and their accompanying shadows, two distinct realities coexist: the innocence of childhood and play, and the harrowing cruelty of war. The exhibition challenges our everyday perceptions and seeks to awaken our capacity for empathy.

Through her art, Laukka gives a voice and tangible representation to the suffering and plight of Ukrainian children caught in the chaos of war. Their dreams are conveyed in an animation created by Laukka, based on interviews and video recordings conducted by the Ukrainian organisation.

Anni Laukka (b. 1982) is a visual artist from Kokkola who, in recent years, has focused on creating sculptures from unconventional materials, often employing shadows as an integral element of her work. Her pieces are included in several public collections.
