Magical

Magical is Kuopio Art Museum’s interpretation of magical realism, where miraculous, mythical and even grotesque events or characters are depicted in a realistic setting.

The exhibition takes you on an adventure in surprising spaces where parallel realities meet. Nature acts as a common thread connecting the artists. Tiina Heiska, Alma Jantunen, Timo Kokko, Ilai Elias Lehto, Ulla-Mari Lindström, Minna Markkanen, Anne Meskanen-Barman, Adnan Mirza, Sirpa Hannele Heinonen, Tytti Putkonen, Joel Slotte, Anna Tahkola and working group Peter Revonkorpi & Henri Lindström have been invited to join Magical. The works of the invited artists are complemented by the collections of Kuopio art museum.

The exhibition features different realities, sometimes scary (spooky!) and sometimes fairytale-like. But is there more behind the pieces?

The exhibition’s landscapes change from fairytale-like atmospheres to dark worlds emerging from the depths of the forest. Be prepared for surprises as you navigate the labyrinthine exhibition space. As you progress through the exhibition, the angle of your view and the atmosphere will change as you go. Like Alice’s Wonderland, the exhibition also plays with size. Tiina Heiska’s Alice whisks the viewer into different worlds, the first of which is bright and blooming.
