Perttu Saksa has been spending time and working on the island of Jussarö located in the outer archipelago of Ekenäs. Jussarö has a fascinating, multiphase history that is still present in the landscape of the island. The island has long been an important place for seafarers. There used to be a coast guard station and military activity on the island, and it still has a functioning offshore lighthouse. In the 1700s, a mine was established on the island, where iron ore was mined up until 1967. Since the closing of the mine, nature has taken over the buildings in the area, thus creating an unreal and eerie atmosphere on the island. On the other hand, the natural forest has been preserved on the island. Saksa has succeeded in capturing the vulnerability and diversity of the natural forest in his series of photographs.
Perttu Saksa reproduces the cultural heritage of Jussarö in a two-storey exhibition of photographic works and sculptures at Chappe.
In connection with the exhibition, a documentary video on Perttu Saksa will be published as part of the series Studio visit Chappe.
