On 27th of June 2025, the National Costume Center of Finland will open a new permanent exhibition, A Timeless Tradition - Finnish National Costume, at the Craft Museum of Finland.
This captivating exhibition invites you to embark on a fascinating journey through the vibrant world of Finnish national costumes, showcasing their use across different eras and blending traditional craftsmanship with history and fashion.
The Finnish national costume is a stunning festive attire perfect for all celebrations, continuing the rich tradition of folk festive clothing. The costumes on display are exquisite replicas of the festive outfits worn by the peasant population in the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring intricate craftsmanship and fashion elements typical of those periods.
Discover the charm of Finnish folk attire, which was elaborate and impressive in the 18th and 19th centuries. Clothing was used to express wealth, marital status, and religion. Church visits were important festive occasions where people gathered on the church hill to exchange news and admire each other's attire.
At the exhibition, you can marvel at both Western Finnish and Karelian national costumes. The distinctive features and origins of men's and women's costumes are beautifully highlighted through the exhibition's examples. The diversity of national costumes is showcased through alternative parts and various accessories. You'll also discover special techniques such as rekkokirjonta (a type of embroidery), lace-making, and ribbon weaving.
