Ape Farm
The Automobile and Road Museum Mobilia, Kangasala
- 10.5.2025–30.9.2025
In May, Mobilia opens the Ape Farm, where you can observe the fascinating adaptations of Finnish Monkeys—how the Honda Monkey has evolved to survive in our cold climate and strict regulations.
There are plenty of primates in Finland, but besides humans, we also have a strong and thriving population of Monkeys originating from Japan. Some individuals spend the winter in stable-like shelters, but many have adapted to living in their territories year-round, especially near middle schools.
The very first species arrived here as early as the 1960s, but at that time, they struggled to adapt to our unusual conditions and strict moped regulations. The real migration began in the 1970s, and soon, a species specialized in Finnish conditions had spread across practically all areas covered by paved roads in our country.
By the 1980s, the Monkey population had grown strong in the North, even though neighboring countries did not provide equally favorable conditions. The species was also considered dangerous, although accidents often resulted from playful interactions with enthusiastic young humans. The migration of the original Monkey population to Finland ended in 1997, but closely related relatives have continued to arrive steadily from other parts of Asia.
