Antti Tolvi, piano
Morton Feldman (1926–1987), one of the most important composers of post-tonal music and an inspiration to numerous contemporary composers, would have turned one hundred years old in 2026. The concert programme celebrates Feldman’s music and the musical aspects that were central to him, such as silence, sensitivity, transparency, and a bold use of time.
Sound artist and experimental musician Antti Tolvi recorded Feldman’s piano work Intermission 6 as a 72-minute interpretation in 2024. Intermission 6 is one of Feldman’s piano works that allows for the greatest degree of interpretative freedom.
The score consists of a single page with 15 events (chords or single notes) which can be played in any order, and can be performed by one or two pianists. Feldman writes that “The pianist, or pianists, begins with any sound on the page, will hold until barely audible, then proceed to whichever other sound he may choose. Sounds may be repeated.”
Most performances of ‘Intermission 6’ are between 4 and 10 minutes, but Antti Tolvi extends the piece to a duration more typical of Feldman’s later music. The resonant space of the Sibelius Hall creates excellent acoustic conditions for both performing and experiencing the work.
Antti Tolvi (b.1977 in Panelia Finland) is sound artist, composer and performer living and working in Turku / Kemiö Island Finland. He has been one of the most important names in the field of experimental music scene in Finland since 2002. Antti has performed over 400 times on three continents and 16 solo records have been released from Antti. Since 2016, Antti has held over 20 solo exhibitions and participated many group exhibitions. Setting up happenings and festivals is also part of Antti´s artistic practice. Yearly Kiilan Äänipäivät sound art festival since 2014, smaller events since 2001 and kelluu performance art events in Turku (with Anna Tahkola) 2026.
Antti´s practice has been focused around just listening almost two decades now. By listening, Antti means listening, which is not only listening with our ears, but listening with the whole being. Just listening what happens in inside and outside of us. Practicing listening also inseparably includes practicing relaxation. We cannot hear very subtly anything if our mind is fixed somewhere. In other words, in this practice, we pay attention to human nature, while being sensitive to the particularities of space and form.
