MuseoFest: Lieroinen, Kalmu-Sakri, Kyyrä – Witchcraft in Central Finland

The lecture examines witches who were active in the Central Finland region from the 17th century to the early 20th century, based on historical and documentary sources. Who were these mysterious wise folk, surrounded by tales of magic and mysticism? In reality, they were often itinerant men who travelled from place to place and were consulted about illnesses, missing possessions and other everyday problems. Lieroinen, Kalmu-Sakri, Kyyrä and other wise men of their time played important roles in their communities – and their true stories may be even more fascinating than the legends.
