The Museum’s approach is active, exiting and inspired, and it wants to create opportunities for people and art to come together. The entry is free of charge and the Museum acts like a living room for the citizens, a place to stop by.
The main emphasis of the Museum’s exhibitions is on national, international and regional contemporary ar.
The public is not left clueless all on their own, instead they are ushered into the world of art with free guided tours if necessary. Workshops geared for all ages ensure that visitors can partake in the making of art. In addition to exhibitions the Art Museum also acts as an arena for dance and theatre performances, lectures and seminars etc.
The Art Museum’s collection is comprised of mainly Finnish art from the 1980s and 1990s. The Museum also manages the City of Kajaani ‘s Art Collection which has works located in public spaces.
Kajaani Art Museum is located in the centre of Kajaani in a 1936 functionalist police station building designed by architect Eino Pitkänen.
