Fredagar på Sibbe: Aija Puurtinen & Brooklynin satu
The Sibelius Museum, Turku
- 3.10.2025 (19.00-20.00)
Aija Puurtinen (vocals, bass), Selina Sillanpää (backing vocals, violin, acoustic guitar), Helmi Antila (backing vocals, violin, piano), Esa Kuloniemi (vocals, guitar)
Founded in 2009, Aija Puurtinen & Brooklynin satu will perform in Turku at the Sibelius Museum on October 3, 2025.
The group, which has already released three full-length albums, bases its storytelling in history, but their songs—rooted in Americana and folk traditions—sound fresh and relevant in today’s musical landscape.
This performance is a musical journey through the emotional landscape of Finnish-American migration. The audience will experience an acoustic and semi-acoustic set performed in both Finnish and “Finglish” (a blend of Finnish and English), drawing deeply from Finnish and American folk traditions. The music is flavored with elements of folk, blues, and even Jamaican influences.
Before World War II, approximately a third of a million Finns emigrated to North America. Bassist and singer Aija Puurtinen has composed new migration-themed songs to lyrics by Perttu Hemminki, written in Finglish, reflecting different aspects and eras of this migration. The songs evoke the past with nostalgia, reflection, and joy.
The Turku concert is part of the release tour for their third album, Sudbury Tango!, which came out in spring 2024. The performance will also include material from the earlier albums Brooklynin satu and Lännen maata.
