Sugar Doors exhibition performance day and curator-artist-talk

Sugar Doors exhibition will expand to become the venue for Essi Kausalainen's performance F & Y. In addition exhibition curator Andreas Nilsson will discuss the themes of the exhibition with two artists from the exhibition. Participation with admission fee/Museum Card. Free admission for visitors under 18 and students.

F & Y Performance at 12-16 | Hall

F & Y is a score for two performers and exhibition works. The performance will take place in the Sugar Doors exhibition for one day. During this time, the exhibition space will open up for movement and change. Museum visitors are welcome to stay by it for a duration of their own choosing.

F & Y is a continuation of Kausalainen’s long-standing collaboration with performance artist Florian Feigl (Berlin) and actress Yuko Takeda (Helsinki). The performance score written for them will temporarily transform the Sugar Doors exhibition into a stage with human scale events of rest, breathing, walking and bursting into dance. The performers tune into the flow of the space and the artworks in it, opening up space for the viewer to linger on.

Sugar Doors is a joint exhibition by four Helsinki-based artists: Essi Kausalainen, Olli Keränen, Mikko Kuorinki and Maija Luutonen. In the exhibition, paintings, sculptures, installations, and sound engage in spatial interaction with each other. The group’s practice echoes the strong tradition of conceptual thinking in contemporary art, drawing attention to the constructed nature of art and the complexity of processes related to understanding and creation of meaning.

Curator-artist-talk at 14 | Lecture hall

Exhibition curator Andreas Nilsson will discuss the themes and backgrounds of the exhibition with Essi Kausalainen and Olli Keränen, two artists from the Sugar Doors exhibition.

Andreas Nilsson is a curator at Moderna Museet Malmö, and also programme coordinator for the lecture series KHM x MMM, a collaboration between Malmö Art Academy and Moderna Museet Malmö. His curatorial work is often situated at the intersection of visual arts and performance arts, and recurring interests and themes are the relationship between subject and object, absurdity, theatricality and im/materiality.

At Moderna Museet Malmö, recent curated projects include solo presentations with Vivian Suter (2025), Jimmy Robert (2023), Isabel Lewis (2022), and Merike Estna (2019), and the group shows On The Absurd Drama That is Also Life (2024/2025), and Conditioned Movement (2022).
