Songs from Exile is a one-woman musical performance for voice and travel harmonium. Its backbone is the collaboration between composer Hanns Eisler and writer Bertolt Brecht during the years 1933–1950.

The performance follows Brecht’s journey from early-1930s Berlin to Finland, from Finland to the United States, and from there back to post-war East Germany. The songs offer sharp and moving commentary on the rise of the Nazis, fascism, war, and displacement. Between them, there is room for questions such as: Why were the Nazis still regarded in 1930s Germany mainly as a ridiculous and harmless political movement? The performance also reflects on the transgenerational sense of guilt associated with German identity, as well as Finland’s role as an ally of Nazi Germany.

The language of the performance is a mix of German and Finnish. The stripped-down “orchestra” consists of a travel harmonium built in 1930s Germany.
