The Splendid Villa
Carlsro, Kristiinankaupunki
- 3.6.2026–30.9.2026
In the Carlsro Museum’s summer exhibition, visitors are invited to glimpse both the splendour of Carlsro’s villa era and its dramatic end, when an embezzler drove the ship‑owning family into bankruptcy.

130 years ago, Alfred Carlström — the richest man in Ostrobothnia, a shipowner and merchant — built one of the most beautiful villas in Kristinestad on the shore of a tranquil inland lake. The splendid villa hosted elegant celebrations and warmly welcomed guests, while strawberries grew in the garden and peacocks wandered freely. The idyll shattered in 1910, bringing the entire town to its knees, when an extensive series of embezzlements came to light. What happened to Carlsro? And what became of the shipowner and his family? The full story of Carlsro’s villa years is presented in this summer’s exhibition in honour of the villa’s anniversary year.
