Amélie Lundahl’s atmospheric painting Breton Girl as a jigsaw puzzle to brighten winter evenings! The painting was on display in spring 2025 at the Jyväskylä Art Museum’s exhibition Timeless Beauty, which featured late-19th- and early-20th-century portraits, scenes from women’s lives, and delicate floral still lifes. Lundahl’s work had previously only been seen at Jyväskylä City Hall.

Amélie Lundahl (1850–1914) was a Finnish painter. She was born in Oulu and moved to Helsinki in 1870, where she studied at the Drawing School of the Finnish Art Society. At the same time, she received painting instruction from the German portrait painter Bernhard Reinhold. From 1872 to 1873, Lundahl studied industrial arts at the Stockholm School of Sculpture with the help of a grant, after which she returned to Helsinki to continue her studies at the drawing school and at Adolf von Becker’s private academy. In 1874, Lundahl was hired as the drawing school’s first female teacher. When Lundahl received a state travel grant in 1877, she traveled to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian with her friend Maria Wiik. The following summer, Lundahl painted in Brittany, which later became a fashionable destination among Finnish artists.

Lundahl’s paintings from the 1880s reflect her interest in the shift toward realism and naturalism taking place in French painting, and especially in the challenges of depicting light and painting outdoors. In addition to the Breton landscape, Lundahl was inspired by the French painter Jules Breton (1827–1906). The central theme of Lundahl’s years in Brittany became the solitary woman.

The jigsaw puzzle has 1,000 pieces and its size is 49 x 68 cm.
