Barley Porridge and Crispbread – The Story of Finnish School Meals explores the history of school meals in Finland and their role within the welfare state. The exhibition shows how school meals began as food aid for the poor in the early 20th century and became a right for every student in 1943, ensuring equal access to nutrition and learning.
School meals have evolved into a modern service that considers both health and social aspects. The exhibition presents menus and memories from different decades, highlighting experiences and emotions connected to over 80 years of Finnish school meal history.
Barley Porridge and Crispbread – The Story of Finnish School Meals is on view at the Hotel and Restaurant Museum from 18 September 2026 to 29 August 2027.
