The opening of the exhibition: Curly birch – the tree pressed by the devil Fri 24.4.

The Craft Museum of Finland, Jyväskylä

  • 24.4.2026 (17-19)

Welcome to open with us the Curly birch – the tree pressed by the devil exhibition, which tells about the swirly pattern of the curly birch.

Exhibition opens a view into one of Finland's most respected and enigmatic materials. Curly birch is a special wood, whose story weaves together folk tradition, a rare genome, research and new design possibilities. Its twisting and lively grain pattern has inspired admiration, appreciation and beliefs for centuries.

Curly birch has been called the supermaterial of Finnish nature and design - and for good reason. The figure of the curly birch is created by a growth anomaly in the trunk, which makes it demanding but rewarding to work with: it requires precision and understanding of the material's properties from the maker.
