Everything About Fungi – Anniversary Exhibition of the Turku Mycological Society

The Turku Mycological Society’s 50th anniversary exhibition “Everything About Fungi” offers a small glimpse into the diversity of fungal species and the many ways fungi are used. The exhibition can be explored in the seminar hall of the Botanical Garden.

The fungal kingdom is an extremely diverse group of organisms, with the estimated number of species reaching into the millions. Only about 150,000 species have been scientifically described so far, and roughly 8,000 of these are known from Finland. We are connected to fungi in many ways. They live in close coexistence with us, even if we rarely notice it. In nature, decomposer fungi release nutrients back into circulation, and most plants rely on symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi. In industry, fungi are widely used in food production, medicine, and cosmetics. In recent years, fungi have also entered the fields of textiles and construction materials.

The exhibition is open daily from 11:00 to 17:00 (Wednesdays 11:00–19:00), unless the seminar hall is reserved for a private event.
Organized by the Turku Mycological Society.

The Turku Mycological Society was founded in 1976 at the initiative of Professor Yrjö Mäkinen. The society’s main purpose is to guide, educate, and advise people in identifying, collecting, and using mushrooms. The society organizes lectures, mushroom exhibitions, excursions, and mushroom dyeing workshops open to all interested participants.

Exhibition Opening on 1 April at 17:00

Welcome to the exhibition opening. The opening lecture will be given by long-time mushroom enthusiast and mushroom author Jarkko Korhonen, on the topic “Fungi, Me, and the Turku Mycological Society.”
