The Magic of Patch – Modern Quilt Art from Finland 9.1.–9.5.2027
The Craft Museum of Finland, Jyväskylä
- 9.1.2027–9.5.2027
The exhibition tells the story of a period when women’s everyday craft began to find new forms, new audiences and a new place within the field of art.

The Craft Museum of Finland’s 2027 exhibition year opens with The Magic of Patch – Modern Quilt Art from Finland. The exhibition offers an insight into the development of Finnish quilt art and the artists behind it.
The exhibition is based on PhD Vuokko Isaksson’s doctoral thesis in craft science, Tilkkutyö nousi sängyltä seinälle (University of Eastern Finland, 2024). It features works by 24 artists representing the Modern Quilt Art Movement, which originated in the United States and reached Finland in the early 1990s. At the same time, the Finnish quilt association Finn Quilt ry was founded, helping Finnish quilt-making to break away from the traditions of utility textiles and making according to patterns. Gradually, it also developed into an independent form of visual expression.
The transformation of quilt art was not only an artistic development, but also a social and generational experience. An everyday utility textile strongly associated with women became a means of personal visual expression, while makers began to claim their place in public spaces and art institutions. At the same time, Finnish quilt art became increasingly international.
The change represented a liberation from the culture of making according to a predetermined pattern. Makers were no longer simply the objects of the work or people reproducing an existing design, but subjects of their own lives. Making by hand, once largely invisible, became visible.
The Magic of Patch is curated by Vuokko Isaksson
