Finland the Land of Opera

The Sibelius Museum, Turku

The temporary exhibition in the Sibelius Museum, Finland the Land of Opera, explores Finnish opera history.

 

What connects the Kalevala, the Finnish Civil War, the Moomins, climate change, and plumbing renovations? All of these, and much more, have been explored in Finland through the medium of opera.

The exhibition explored, among other topics, the first opera performances in Finland, the beginnings of Finnish opera composition, opera singers, the opera boom of the 1970s, and contemporary works addressing pressing themes in today’s society. Visitors will discover photographs, stage costumes, letters, and various artefacts – and, of course, listen to excerpts from selected works.
