RUOKOKOSKI!

Jalmari Ruokokoski (1886–1936) was a gifted and productive Finnish painter representing the Expressionist movement, who has nevertheless remained in the shadow of many of his contemporaries.

The RUOKOKOSKI! exhibition now brings the bohemian artist back to Savonlinna and into the spotlight. This city held a special place in Jalmari Ruokokoski’s life: he was enchanted by Savonlinna and even considered buying a house here, in a place where he found more than enough landscapes to inspire his paintings.

Ruokokoski worked in Savonlinna for a long period in the summer of 1935, the year before his death. At that time, a large exhibition of his works was held at the Puistokatu elementary school, and as a result, many of his works can still be found in the Savonlinna region today. In the exhibition at Riihisaari, the artist’s self-portraits play a central role, as do discoveries from private collections.

In 2026, it will be the 140th anniversary of Jalmari Ruokokoski’s birth. The exhibition is also part of the city’s Dream Year of Culture 2026.
