At the Summer Cabin

The At the Summer Cabin photography exhibition explores the meanings of Finnish summer cottage life and the intergenerational themes found in cottage photos, bringing together fine art photography, documentary photography, photojournalism, as well as film. Featured photographers include Martti Jämsä, Matleena Jänis, Jari Silomäki, Paavo Jänis, Jukka Gröndahl, Pertti Ahva and Hugo Simberg. The exhibition is curated by Matleena Jänis.

For many Finns, the summer cabin is the most beloved place in the world—a setting where memories and traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. It is a place where people experience a special connection with nature, seeking both mental and physical wellbeing. The photographs and the film in the exhibition explore the essence of summer cottage life, the continuity between generations, our relationship with nature, and memory. Looking at cottage life invites us to reflect critically on our consumer-driven way of life and to ask what ultimately matters most to us.
