WOMEN'S KALEVALA - ART EXHIBITION

Parppeinvaara poem village, Ilomantsi

  • 1.6.2027–31.8.2027

Four Finnish female artists who have been inspired by the Kalevala in different ways are participating in the Women's Kalevala exhibition.

According to the exhibition's artists, the Kalevala plays a significant role in the cultural and historical context of women in Finland. It is the Finnish national epic that brings together myths, legends, and stories, offering women both positive and challenging examples. The Kalevala features several strong female figures, such as Louhi, Väinämöinen's mother, and Aino. These characters present various roles and powers of women, and they can serve as inspiration and role models for women. Many of the female characters in the Kalevala are powerful and independent. They possess abilities and skills that influence the course of the stories. According to the exhibition's artists, this can encourage women to recognize their own strength and significance. The Kalevala is an important part of Finnish cultural heritage, and it helps women understand their own cultural identity and history.

Although the Kalevala features strong female figures, it also contains traditional gender roles and challenges that can spark discussion about the status and rights of women. The artists aim to inspire women to engage in critical examination and discussion regarding gender equality. Nature is an important element in the Kalevala, and many female characters are connected to nature. This can symbolize the role of women as a source of life and growth. According to the exhibition's artists, the Kalevala can strengthen a sense of community as women share and explore its stories and their meanings together.
